What Makes a Great Family Portrait Session | Albuquerque Family Photographer {Kat Oswald Photography}

What makes a great family session? An Albuquerque Family Portrait Photographer shares her thoughts...

There are hundreds of answers to this question, and every photographer and family would answer differently.  So, let me share what I believe....  I believe every family is unique and every family is different - my goal is always to capture you authentically.  I believe this time in your life is irreplaceable.  I believe your family should have fun and interact naturally during your portrait session.  Click here for more information on our family portrait sessions1

SO THEN, WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES A GREAT FAMILY SESSION?

You...  You are what makes your family portrait session great.  Regardless of the location, the colors you chose to wear, the number of children, the age of your children, the personalities....  It's you - the way you love, the way you interact - that is what will make your family portrait session great.  I'm here to capture you  - it's your love, your interactions, your connections that make the portrait session special.

Sarah hired me for a mini session and requested Elena Gallegos as the location for her family portrait session.  Her children quickly recognized me, as I'm their school photographer as well!  Many of my school families hire me for family portraits, and it's so wonderful to see these kiddos interact with their families.

Sarah's recent family portrait session was fantastic - we had a great time together!  It was a gorgeous evening in Albuquerque as we were at the base of the Sandia Mountains at Elena Gallegos as the sun was setting.  The love this family has for each other showed in their images - everyone was so sweet and loving!

I truly love photographing family sessions - especially with young children.  But as I edit Sarah's gallery - of over 60 images, I realize that I have two favorite shots that always stand out...

1.  MAMA PHOTOS.  Mom's are typically the last to want an individual portrait - but it's so important...  Your children will cherish these portraits of their mamas!  I love pulling moms aside for a portrait! Of course we always have to get portraits of the kiddos loving on their mama as well!

2.  MOMMY & DADDY PHOTOS.  If you are anything like me, when you scroll through your phone you will find that it is filled with photos of your children.  I don't have a single photo with just me and my husband on my phone - that's ridiculous!  And, most of our family sessions end up with great family shots - but no couple shots.  So, during my family sessions, I make sure to capture a few moments with just mom and dad.  Their reaction was pure, authentic, and absolutely loving.  You can easily see the love this couple shares and how happy Sarah is to be in Robert's arms.

It was such a pleasure to capture Sarah and her gorgeous family! Their dynamic and love is what made their family portrait session great, and I'm so thankful they chose me to be their photographer!
