I cannot begin to tell you the beauty of regularly updating your family photos.
As I sat on the couch talking with my grandmother during her last visit from Northern California, I noticed that as the conversation paused we were both looking at the same photograph on my mantle. It is a simple photograph of her with her husband and my daughter, who was less than a year old at the time. You see, this photograph is now a priceless treasure to both of us… In the photograph, my grandmother is looking at my grandfather, my grandfather is looking down at my daughter, who is sitting on my grandmother's lap and looking up - right back at him. My grandfather has a huge smile on his face as they simply sit on a park bench and candidly enjoy each other's company. I sent my grandparents that photograph as a digital file (which became their screen saver), in a frame and as the cover of a custom album that I designed for them, to share my daughter's "first year", since they live so far away from us.
As my grandfather's health deteriorated from cancer, he continued to look at that photo and ask "I wonder what I was saying to her..." and "Do you see how she is looking at me!?". He would often laugh and smile as he held that photo in his hands, talking about his memories from that moment. My grandfather has since passed, and I so dearly treasure that photograph - the only one I have of him with his only great-grandchild. And while my daughter will most likely not remember this moment or meeting her great-grandfather - that moment has been captured, is part of our family history and will remain alive.
So many times clients and friends alike tell me that they will book a session once they "loose the weight", or they tell me "I know I need to book a session, but right now we're just to busy". I completely understand and I know it's difficult to find the time to get everything done in a day, let alone to tackle the task of getting the family together and dressed for a photography session. Heck, it took everything that day to get my grandparents to go outside so I could get "just one photograph"… There are so many reasons and excuses to push back your next photography session, but I encourage you to take the time to make it a priority. Your life, as it is right now, is worth remembering. Your family will reflect back on the moment as a whole and cherish that memory rather than wishing you had "waited for a better time".
Updating family photos is absolutely priceless. I get a little choked up after I complete a session when a family member tells me "I don't remember the last time we had family photos taken", "It was so nice to see everyone together again.", or "This is the first time in 10 years that we have all been together". I'm always excited to work with families and can easily customize a mini session for those in a hurry. I understand your time is valuable, so are the moments that will be captured in your session.
So friends, make it a family date night. This time of year is perfect as fall is just around the corner, the leaves will begin changing colors soon, and Albuquerque is absolutely spectacular this time of year! Whether you use family photographs for Christmas Cards or you realize it's time to just get the family together to update your photos, today is the day. Schedule your family session and maybe even make a dinner reservation after your session. Time with family is priceless; turn a moment into a memory for your family.
